Setup your Dialup Connection

First double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop. You will get a screen like the one above. Next, double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon.



Make a New Connection

After double-clicking the Dial-Up Networking icon, you should see a screen like the one above. Double-click on the Make New Connection icon.

The Make New Connection screen looks like the above. Just click Next >

Enter in the phone number for your connection speed in the next screen. For 28.8/33.6 dialup, enter 736-3796. For US Robotics x2 56K and ISDN dialup, enter 243-2040. You don't need to enter an area code if you are calling from the 914 area code. Click Next > and then press the Finish button. Your Dial-Up Networking folder should look like the one below.

Setting the Dial-Up Properties


Select your newly-created AdVANtech connection icon, press the right mouse button and choose Properties... You should get a dialog box which looks like this.

          Set the Server Type


Press the Server Type... button. You'll get the Server Types dialog box. It should look like this. In the Type of Dial-Up Server section, press the down arrow to drop down the list box. The list box options look like this. Since you're planning to use PPP, choose that server type in the list box.

Make sure that none of the options in the Advanced options: section are checked. Also, make sure that TCP/IP in the Allowed network protocols: section is the ONLY one checked.



     TCP/IP Settings

Next, press the TCP/IP Settings... button. You'll get the TCP/IP Settings dialog box. In the first section, select Server assigned IP address. In the next section, select Specify name server addresses. This will enable you to enter your DNS address. For Primary DNS:, enter 208.148.84.1. For Secondary DNS: enter 208.148.84.2 Leave the last two fields set at 0.0.0.0

The Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network options should both be checked. The screen should look like this. Press the OK button.

Hit the OK button in the remaining dialog box and you're almost ready to dial!



Dialing in and Getting Connected

Double-click the AdVANtech icon that you recently made. You'll get the Connect To dialog, which looks like this. Put your login name (i.e. esmith) and password in the appropriate text areas.

Press the Connect button and your modem should start dialing. After a few rings, the host machine should answer. Windows 95 will take care of the rest.

If all went well, you'll see a Connected to AdVANtech dialog box like this one.
