SETTING UP OS/2 WARP v3.0 and 4.0
To setup OS/2 v4.0, do everything the same, except you don't need ppp.zip and you
must first click the Programs icon, and then the Internet(Modem), and then the Dial Other
Internet Providers icon. Other then that, it's the same. Enjoy!
1.First thing to do is make sure you have the latest OS/2 internet software that will
allow for PPP support, you need to get a copy of ppp.zip from hobbes.nmsu.edu, located in
the /pub/os2/network/tcpip directory. You will also need to make sure you have a copy of
pkunzip for DOS or unzip for OS/2 on your machine. Once you download the ppp.zip, put it
in your tcp/ip sub-directory and do a "pkunzip -d ppp.zip" (or a unzip -d
ppp.zip if using OS/2's unzip). Now do a shutdown and restart your system. 2.Once your
machine is back up and you have installed the ppp update (as shown above), you are ready
to begin your internet configuration.
A) Locate the Internet Information Highway icon on your desktop. Open it and select
the internet internet utilities icon. In this folder, you will see a icon called
"dial other service provider". Select this icon to bring up the IBM dial-up for
tcp/ip menu.
B) Select the 'add entry' box so we can add PCRealm as your internet service provider.
Under 'NAME' enter PCReal
Under 'DESCRIPTION' enter a description for PCRealm, such as 'my favorite isp'.
Under 'LOGIN ID' enter your username you have setup with PCRealm. Make sure you enter this
in all lower case.
Under 'PASSWORD' enter the password you have chosen for your account. To the right of your
password, you will see a little box that says 'Required'. Make sure this box is checked.
Under 'PHONE NUMBER' enter the PCRealm data number you will be calling for your area.
Under 'LOGIN SEQUENCE" make sure this is blank.
Under 'CONNECTION TYPE' make sure the PPP is selected. If you cannot set this to PPP or
the Connection Type field does not exist, then a error occured when you installed the new
ppp.zip file. Make sure you re-booted your system after you installed the new ppp.zip
file. Double check the readme file that came with the ppp.zip that you downloaded.
We are now done with the first page. At the bottom of your screen you will see that you
were on page 1 of 4. Use the mouse to select the right arrow to move to page 2.
3.Now that we are on page 2, we need to add the following information. Note that the
cursor will land on the netmask field skipping over the 2 IP address information fields.
These are not used for PPP accounts.
Under 'NETMASK' enter 255.255.255.0
Under 'MRU SIZE' leave as default, 1500. Also leave the VJ COMPRESSION field checked off.
NOTE: If you find you are having a problem with your connections, you can modify these
settings and turn VJ compression OFF!
Under 'DOMAIN NAMESERVER' enter 206.229.42.1
Under 'YOUR HOST NAME' enter your username. For example, if your username was smith, you
would enter smith in this field.
Under 'YOUR DOMAIN NAME' enter pcrealm.net (all in lower case).
4.Now press the arrow and move to page 3 of 4. Here we will complete the servers/host and
mail server fields.
Under 'NEWS SERVER' enter news.pcrealm.net (lower case)
Under 'GOPHER SERVER' either enter your favorite gopher server or leave this field blank.
Under 'WWW SERVER' enter http://www.pcrealm.net (lower case)
Under 'MAIL GATEWAY' enter mail.pcrealm.net
Under 'POP MAIL SERVER' enter mail.pcrealm.net
Under 'REPLY DOMAIN' enter pcrealm.net
Under 'REPLY (MAIL) ID' enter your username (in lower case).
Under 'POP LOGIN ID' enter your username the same way you did above
Under 'POP PASSWORD' enter your login password for your account.
This completes page 3 of 4. Now we need to complete page 4, the last page. This page
contains information regarding your modem. Use the arrow again to move to the next page.
5.Under 'MODEM TYPE' select the brand of your modem. If your modem does not exist select
Hayes Compatable Modem. The default settings should work fine. If you have call waiting
you can also choose to disable it for that call by selecting the disable button in the
call waiting field.
Under 'COM PORT' make sure you select the appropriate port for your modem.
Now that all the information is complete, double click in the upper left corner to close
the 'add entries' box. It will ask you if you want to save or discard your settings. MAKE
SURE YOU SAY SAVE!
You are now ready to dial out. Press the dial icon and OS/2 should take your modem off
hook and dial out and connect to PCRealm. Once your connection is established, you can
begin to use the internet applications that came with your OS/2 internet package.
