What is DSL?
DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. DSL is much faster than a conventional modem and allows you to use your telephone while you're on the Internet, without disturbing or ending your Internet connection. DSL provides both phone and high-speed data communication over the same analog phone line. Since DSL is constantly connected, you never have to "dial up" to access the Internet. No waiting. No busy signals.

Why use DSL?
Speed and convenience. DSL is at least nine times faster than a 28.8 modem. In most DSL locations, your rates will be even faster. That's why DSL.Pak! is excellent for telecommuting, desktop video conferences, distance learning, or simply high-speed, low-cost Internet access.

Is DSL service available everywhere?
Not yet, but the service is expanding rapidly. Currently, many telephone companies do not offer DSL, and those that do only offer it in limited locations. DSL is only available to locations within 18,000 feet (about three miles) of wire distance (not a straight line) to the closest telephone company supporting DSL. Certain telephone company equipment might also prevent DSL connections from working.

Why is DSL more affordable than other high-speed services?
Because DSL uses your existing analog phone line. Also, DSL connections are not monitored by the phone company, so you, the user, have to report service problems. In other words, if your connection is interrupted for some reason, the telephone company wouldn't instantly know about the problem like they would know about your phone line being dead.

If your Internet connection is of a mission critical nature, then traditional frame relay, point to point, or ATM services may be better choices than DSL. We can help you decide if you're not sure which service is best for you.

Why is there no charge for my time on line? Because we only charge for the amount of data you download or upload.

You can transfer 500MB of non-MIS network data per month for a flat fee. We based this figure on a study of usage rates of more than 10 million Internet users. Our metered DSL offering will provide more than ample service to most customers at a very low monthly cost. Visits to or downloads from any of Micron Internet Services' Web pages are free, including email traffic and news from newsgroups.

If you visit well-designed Web sites and limit the amount of software you download from the Web, you'll probably never exceed the 500MB limit during a month. For example, you would have to open Micron Internet's home page more than 18,000 times each month to exceed 500MB.

If I qualify for DSL, how soon can I start using it? Contact us as soon as the telephone company installs your DSL equipment and turns on your DSL service.

Costs & Requirements
It depends on the number of computers you want to connect, and whether you're a US West or GTE customer. Prices range from about $200 to $300 and the equipment can be purchased or rented on a month-to-month basis. Check with your telephone company when ordering, or contact Micron Internet Services for equipment information.

Why is DSL service metered?
Because your time on-line is unlimited and free. The metering only measures -- and charges for -- the data you access outside of Micron's network. Chances are good that the information and services you want are right on our network

Does DSL replace my current dialup access?
Yes, if you always plan to connect from the location where the DSL service is installed. If you only have DSL access, you can't connect to the Internet when you're traveling -- but you can add a dial-up account to your DSL account for only $10 per month

Can DSL replace frame relay or point-to-point connections?
In some cases, yes. Customers using frame relay connections which do not have multiple virtual circuits defined and which are in locations where DSL is available should analyze the costs of both managed and unmanaged services to determine which is best for their needs. DSL services are not "managed" services and may not have the same guaranteed minimum service levels that other connection options such as frame relay offer. In most cases, different network equipment, such as routers, may be required to switch from frame relay to DSL.

Can more than one computer access the Internet at the same time with a single DSL connection?
Depending on the equipment used to connect the DSL service at the customer's location, one or more computers can be connected to the Internet at the same time.

Are there additional security concerns with DSL?
There are security implications in connecting to any public network. For most home users, or those who don't have multiple computers, there are usually no additional security concerns with DSL.
